Ruling Balls

I've caught myself on more than one occasion this season going, F-F-F! F this cold! Like stomping the ground wanting to scream and throw something. For reals- super juvenile styles!

So I put on THIS surfy punky monstrosity!
B-52s-755211.jpg

It makes me feel like I'm giving this cold weather the middle finger.

The B-52's! They got style, they got fun party lyrics, they got beehives, growling, shouting girl vocals, mean bass-lines, funky guitars and organ. This band totally and completely does not suck ass.

A Very Honorable Breakfast

peanut-butter-banana-sandwich.jpg

When I open up a convenience store some day, this'll be a combo. You'll get pb toast with a side of banana slices. The combo #4. Along with other combos like french fries with a hot-fudge sundae; and hot apple pie with a slice of cheddar.

Anyone reading this while in the US, show a sister some love. Get me a fresh batch of real peanut butter straight out the grinder. Extra credit points for another batch of almondbeezie.

SR Goes The Distance

Way to come through Smoke Room. Taking risks in the name of fun. No store-bought insta-costumes at this Halloween party. Everyone came dressed in original style as requested. Our hosts debuted as samurai and tranny, and throughout the night walked in tranny geisha, a kendo couple, an 80’s salary man, Lamu chan, the Gundam driver. There were original takes on a rabbit and pumpkin, and there was me, Steve Zissou. No one got it. But you will later when you watch The Life Aquatic, I protested!!

Like that creepy voice in Field of Dreams predicted: If you build it, they will come.

Smoke Room is on the North side of Nijo St. just east of Kawabata. It’s got antiques, good food, and most importantly great vibes!

Kyoto-->Tokyo Madness

So Kyoto LOCO ended and then we went to Tokyo for CMWC. We went around and did lots of Tokyo touristy things. It was so fun and blurry it was like a dream. Here are some photos.

Dang! I just finished watching the Beyonce episode of ABDC Season 4.
I love it!!!
America's Best Dance Crew.
I've been watching on the interweb (commmercial free!) since the first season and getting my mind blown into oblivion.

Despite the mainstream cheesiness (ie Mario Lopez and his constant double entendres, a few syrupy back-stories, Layla Kayleigh? etc. ) the show redeems itself in so many ways. It showcases real talent and doesn't set the stage for nasty rivalry. How refreshing for MTV! This is the America I'm talkin' about! Vitality, diversity, and creativity to the max. And the judges kill me. Shane is on the money with most all his comments and Lil mama's always wearing some funky outfit and hairdo. Not to mention her uncompromising a-tti-tude. One time she was all, "10, 10, 10 shazam!"

Live Free or Die

band.jpgbirds.jpgbikes.jpg

Being in Japan for extended periods of time does something to a person. It tames you and makes you civilized and proper. It is quite difficult to keep living here without following, to some extent, the bounty of social rules, lest you get stared at, glared at, ostracized and eventually lonely. It’s not a bad thing. From this, I’ve learned to tone it down a notch, to think of others first, to do things more carefully, to have better ettiquete. But sometimes, you just wanna relax. You wanna laugh on the bus in a big voice. You wanna chop it up with the flight attendant on your plane. You wanna dance with that cute stranger over there. You wanna be the way you wanna be. Oh America. Yes, it’s dirty, you gotta drive, and you can get your bag stolen at the bar…but it really is the land of the free.

K-san is the most oshare (stylish) woman I know. When it comes to restaurants, shops, clothes, and goods, she's done her research. Through instinct she can spot what's good from a mile away, and knows what she likes.

On my birthday a few years ago, she gave me a leather Henry Cuir bracelet. Since then, she's taken me to the Henri Cuir store here in Kyoto, and just recently, called up to tell me Mr. Henri himself was in town. So we went over there and I got to mingle and watch him make stuff with his dexterous leathery hands.

Another day, K-san invited me out to a summer party hosted by Bar Yanagino in collaboration with two Kyoto antique dealers. Guests were encouraged to come dressed in yukata and have some light drinks while browsing the discounted antiques. We got there early and thank goodness because look what I found. These are Japanese glasses from the Taisho period (1912- 1926). I got em for 1000 yen a piece.

Watch and learn from the best, and get oshare.

Henri Cuir Kyoto is on Sanjyo x Takakura upstairs of the 45 RPM clothing shop.
Yanagino is covertly located on Sanjyo x Shinnmachi.

I Look Clean in My White T

Tback.jpgTfront.jpg

Just came back from Ashtanga.
I didn't know I could sweat so much from so many different places.
Look at this shirt.

Speaking of shirts, nothing beats a plain white t-shirt right now.
You can wear a circle or a v-neck on your white T.
Noone says it better than these guys. I love everything about this song.

I Was Totally Thrillin'- More Thoughts on MJ

This dude is pretty rad.
I think he also may be stoned. It's the cotton eye.

In other news...I got some pet fish today. They are little tiny baby fish. Like the size of eye boogers.
There are also eggs dangling from the water plants so more fishies on the way!
So far, there are 3 of em, and one is named Wesley, another one is named Rudy, and the 3rd is nameless.

PS22 Chorus

I am so jealous of these kids. I wish I could've had a rad chorus teacher like that! They get to sing Bjork and Tori Amos and Eye of the Tiger! When do you ever sing in unison and harmony with a huge bunch of friends pouring your soul out like that?

PS22 Chorus. They are so feeling it and I am so feeling them!

Hiking and Hanging with Friends

Do I want to go hiking bright and early on a Sunday morning? Umm, I’d rather sleep in and have a leisurely morning... but when do I ever get asked for a hike you know? The plan was to have a nice mellow climb up Mt. Kompira a few hours, break for a picnic lunch, and end up in the charming rural village of Ohara where we would check out an omatsuri (festival) happening. So we had visions of pita sandwiches and made some hummus from scratch the night before.
Our plans were a rough sketch to begin with. There was a lot of guesstimation goin on. I think this is the bridge where we park? At the bottom of the mountain, busted out the Xeroxed map. It somehow got wet in the backpack and was a tye-dyed tattered mess. The hiking route printed on the paper was basically a triangle with squiggly lines threading through it. But...onward on the trail. I think this is the trail? It’s kind of a trail? Oh well, Onward! And this is how it went. But the path got less and less obvious through the trees, the terrain got crumblier, slipperier, steeper. Onward! We’ll get there somehow… some of us said. We looked at the triangle with the squiggle, and assumed some things that led us to assume other things. We kept on until walking became more like tiptoeing and then rock-climbing. And how funny, how the situation was playing out like a movie. Here we are, many personalities with many opinions in the woods, map slowly disintegrating, no cellphone reception.

In the end, we turned back and decended down. We were hungry, and sat in a grassy clearing, and munched up some wholesome food. We took the main road to Ohara. The festival was cancelled due to fear of the pig flu.

If our goal was to stay according to plan: climb the mountain and watch a festival, we failed miserably. But actually our goal was to hang out with one another, share some food, get some exercise, and be outside in nature, and so: Mission Accomplished.

Sheng Wang and the Hawk Attack

nikuman_001.jpgTrill.jpgZone-tailed-Hawk-0006.jpg

My friend from the US came to visit. It was freezing cold a few days ago even though it should be spring, and we had the amazing idea to get some food and eat it by the river.

On Sheng's first visit here, he fell in love with two things: 24- hour fast-food udon aka Nakau and conbini butaman pork bun, which we like to call "Bun-B".

On this second visit, Sheng was coming from the greasy-heavy-food-land of the Phillippines as well as Taiwan: fried meat, fried springrolls, whole roasted pig, etc. So upon arrival in Japan, he had The 'Rrhea. The Diarrhea. After days of the bland food I pushed, Sheng finally felt ready for a hot combini Bun B!

We sat down on a nice bench by Kamogawa. He took one big bite and said, MMMMMMMMM! in that way that he does. And then, WHOOOOSH!! Attack from the back!! a hawk flew down, pushing a great force on the just -eaten bun in his hand. It was hurled to the ground, the meat scattering everywhere. Then another hawk, and another. WHOOOSH, WHOOSH! from the sky. OMG OMG OMG!!! Sheng was freaking out.

R.I.P hot combini bun.

Don't sleep on Sheng Wang, comedian extrodinnarie. Coming to a town near you (If you live in the USA)

Ultimate People AT & UM

Tokyo is in the same Japan as Kyoto, less than 3 hours on the shinkansen, but oh so worlds apart. I remember when my Uncle M came to visit he said, "Damn, Kyoto is inaka!" as in, "Kyoto is country!!" Yes, maybe. But I love it. To me, Tokyo is an, exciting, futuristic place- fast and slick, edgy and modern. And sithin this once-removed urban grandness, there can be pockets of calm, warmth, and down-homeliness.

I know this thanks to my auntie and uncle. Such great hosts they are!!! Without fail they welcome me into their home with big-hearted graciousness. It's better than a 5-star hotel, it's the ultimate inn.

Observe: I 'm provided with my own comfy pyjamas, my own cozy futon, and a set of fluffy towels. I am handed home-made bentos to take with me, graced with healthy nabe dinners, and offered coffee and my uncle's choice bread selection in the mornings. Everything is clean, everything is in good taste. And don't forget all the dvds, records, and cds to watch and listen as I please!!!

On this trip, I learned a lot. I learned about being magnanimous, about being a good host. I learned that as a guest, it's OK to relax, and be thankful and just recieve- it's easier that way. I saw how truly kakkoii people can be by giving.

Thank you Auntie T and Uncle M!!! いつもありがとう。

Thumping Heart in the Night

3266045077_8a8bdd1128.jpg

It was what K-san calls her "big day", which means that her husband is away on a business trip, which means she is free to go out as she pleased. Quick! Reservations for Giro-Giro for 6! We ate the delicious food with extra-long thin tipped chopsticks. The mens behind the counter were almost as good lookin' as the food.

Into our second bottle of wine, we were babbling and chattering and O goes, downward dog? you call it downward dog?! To which we decided for our own bemusement and for all others' didain, to demonstrate tree pose. Did you know? Three trees make forest in kanji. 森.

When you start the night at 10pm and eat and drink and laugh til it hurts, you don't leave until past 1am at which point you don't really want to go home quiet yet so you get in a cab to Yanagino for one last luxurious drink.

Step inside and be blinded by the unparalleled parallel flat planes of wood! The wine glasses make a huge dome around your face like a space helmet as you sip. Yanagino is upscale, yes, but not in a gross, opulent way. Its its...bah! What are words? They're hard to use is what they are! But we kept it on the real and discussed and flashed underpants at eachother.

In the door at 3am and turn out the lights! Under the covers pitch black but a pound pound pounding of my heartbeat super loud in my ears.

Musical Education

:

I can go to Bar Joao and hear people dj sometimes. My friend M was up. Alice Coltrane? Is that Alice Coltrane? I saw that tonight he brought only jazz records. Only Jazz?! A few weeks prior, I saw him at the same spot with a new purchase in a crispy new bag. I peeked inside to see a lone record sitting righteously inside: Pharoah Saunders. Nice. The point is, you can just play the music that you're feeling at the moment. This place lets you do that. Let me borrow these! I said to him. There is so much music out there. There is so much musical education to be had!

How long does it take to recognize a good tune? At least for this one it was somewhere in the milliseconds of putting the needle down. Pharoah Saunders' Love In Us All. You can hear the creative force flowing through the session, where the moment is paramount. The players camouflaged into the background, thier egolessness allowing the music to take center stage.

Good music, Good drinks. Head to Joao on Higashinotoin between Oike & Aneyakoji. Open 6:30 p.m. - 11 p.m. Mon.-Sat.
